Imagine a young student, fresh out of high school, arriving in a new city, feeling overwhelmed and unsure. That’s where Desert Wind comes in. Andrew Deacon, a Namibian farmer with a passion for students, knew first-hand the challenges of finding safe, comfortable, and affordable student housing. When his son Nic, a swimmer for the University of Pretoria (TUKS) team, was struggling to find decent accommodation, Andrew decided to take matters into his own hands.

He purchased a property on the corner of Burnette and Richard Street, with a vision to create a student living experience that prioritized community, safety, and a sense of order and discipline. He demolished the existing house and built 24 state-of-the-art student flats, working closely with renowned architect Izak Venter to ensure a modern and spacious design. He also preserved the existing house on Richard Street, transforming it into a vibrant commune with 9 studios, each with its own bathroom and some with kitchenettes.

This commune is more than just shared living; it’s a haven for students seeking a unique blend of independence and community. The communal kitchen, braai (barbecue) area, and spacious social spaces encourage interaction and foster a sense of belonging. Here, students find support, build lifelong friendships, and create memories that last a lifetime.

Since its opening, Desert Wind has been managed by Andrew’s sister-in-law, Grace Fismer, a former teacher who understands the unique challenges of student life. She created a warm and supportive environment where students feel like family. Grace emphasizes a respectful and responsible living environment, ensuring a safe and harmonious atmosphere for everyone. 90% of new students are referred by word of mouth, a testament to the positive community atmosphere she cultivated.
